A Virginia Christmas tree outing can lead into the foothills west of Washington, the Shenandoah Valley, the central Piedmont or the mountain countryside of southwest Virginia. This checked selection also includes a farm in Isle of Wight County near the Hampton Roads region. Coverage remains thin on the Eastern Shore and in parts of Southside Virginia; the Virginia Christmas Tree Growers Association’s farm directory can help you discover more growers before checking their own current notices.
Canaan fir, white pine, Scotch pine and several spruces appear in these growing fields. Some farms also offer Fraser or concolor fir, while others grow Virginia pine, cedars and cypresses. Species and sizes vary by farm and harvest year. Call ahead when a particular variety matters, and distinguish trees growing in the field from pre-cut trees brought in from elsewhere.
Many sales calendars begin around Thanksgiving, although some farms open earlier in November. Reservation requirements are common, and autumn tagging appointments may happen well before trees can be cut.
Use the Christmas tree planner to measure your space, allowing for the stand and topper. Bring sturdy boots, gloves and suitable straps for transport. Check the farm’s latest notice before leaving, since weather, bookings and remaining cutting-field stock can change your visit.
