North Carolina offers two different kinds of Christmas tree outing: a trip into the western mountains for a Fraser fir, or a visit to a lower-elevation farm growing pines, cedars and cypress. The mountain farms in this list cluster around Boone, Newland, West Jefferson and Laurel Springs, with more options near Waynesville and Glenville. Farm-owned stands bring mountain-grown trees closer to families in the Triangle and Triad.
Fraser fir is the familiar mountain choice. NC State Extension explains that it grows best at higher elevations, while Virginia pine is widely grown for choose-and-cut sales in eastern North Carolina. White pine, Leyland cypress and Carolina Sapphire also appear on the farms checked here. Some growers list additional varieties; check the individual farm's page for the trees it offers.
Many farms begin selling in mid-November or around Thanksgiving. Several open only on selected weekends, and a published closing date can change if trees sell out.
Before leaving, measure your room first, including space for the stand and topper. Bring gloves, a measuring tape and sturdy footwear, and check whether you cut the tree yourself or staff cut your selection. Mountain fields can be steep, so allow time for the walk and loading your tree.
Use your location or a ZIP code. Nothing is stored.
Each tree is a farm, placed by its ZIP code, so it shows the area rather than the gate. Select one to jump to it.
