Choosing a real Christmas tree in Pennsylvania can mean walking a hillside field, tagging a tree ahead of time or picking up one already cut by the grower. Farms are spread across the state, from the southeastern counties and south-central valleys to the northeastern hills, central Pennsylvania and the western counties. Indiana County has a particularly long tree-growing history: the Pennsylvania Christmas Tree Growers Association traces the state's first Christmas tree nursery there to 1938.
Douglas, Fraser, Canaan and concolor firs appear frequently on the farms checked for this list, alongside blue and Norway spruce. The choice varies by farm and field; a species listed on a website does not guarantee a tree in the height you need. Some growers provide saws and help with wrapping, while others cut the tree you select and leave carrying and securing it to you.
Many farms begin selling around Thanksgiving, and some open the weekend before. A few operate for only a handful of days or require appointments.
Before leaving, measure your room first, allowing space for the stand and topper. Bring gloves, sturdy footwear and a measuring tape, then check the farm's own page for opening days, weather closures and any changes to tree sales.
