Choosing a real Christmas tree in Michigan can be a walk through snowy rows, a wagon ride to the fields or a quick stop for a tree already cut by its grower. The Michigan Christmas Tree Association’s farm directory shows growers across the Lower Peninsula, including the northwestern growing area, West Michigan, the southwest, the Lansing area and southeast Michigan. Use the town names below to plan a manageable drive; this checked list does not cover every part of the state.
Michigan offers plenty of variety. Michigan State University Extension's species guide describes the different characteristics of firs, spruces and pines. Fraser fir appears often among the farms checked here, alongside Canaan and concolor fir, blue spruce, Scotch pine and white pine. Some farms grow less familiar fir varieties, too. The trees offered can differ between fields and pre-cut displays, so check the farm's own details.
Many growers begin selling the weekend before Thanksgiving or on Black Friday. Some open only on weekends, and fields can close before a farm finishes selling pre-cut trees.
Measure your room first, allowing for the stand and topper. Bring gloves, a measuring tape and waterproof boots. Check whether saws are supplied, and leave enough daylight to choose, carry and secure your tree.
